Staples for the standard format (2016-2017)

As I attend more events and leagues, I see new players and would like to put this out as a reference and guide to help newer players out. I want to list out what is considered “staples” to help succeed in the competitive world of Pokemon TCG.

Dictionary.com defines staple as a basic or principal item, thing, feature, element, or part. “Deck staples” are key cards that will help a deck execute your deck strategy as consistently as possible. I separate each staple to basic and advanced. I denoted the advanced with an asterisk (*). These cards take a little more skill and practice to use well.  I most likely forgot some cards but I will continue to build this list to completion.

Prices are per card and are according to Trollandtoad.com and Tcgplayers.com at the time of this article. Prices change dynamically.

Trollandtoad.com and TCGplayer.com are 2 of the more popular national websites to purchase cards. Singles can be purchased at Wizardden.com. This is Phoenix Fire Games’ online presence. A lot of local players who have been playing for a while also have a surplus of extra singles as well.

As players fine-tune their game, they may like fancier versions of the same cards.  Those vary from normal to reverse holo to full-art to secret rare.  As my wife always says, the 20 cent version of the Ultra Ball does the same thing as the $100 gold version does.
